This year, my Haute Travels blog is evolving to more than just where I travel; it’s all about a lifestyle. My blog is a place where I get to write about anything that inspires me or helps me discover something about myself that I can share with you.

My haute travels may take me to amazing destinations, cool places in my hometown or self-reflective moments that inspire and motivate me to live my life better. I’ll even introduce you to some friends, some famous others are more low key but nonetheless just as wonderful. But, they all have one thing in common; they teach me things about myself that inspires me to live in the moment.

Confidence, inner beauty and a great glow are the things that you take with you every time you leave your home. And yes, from time to time I’ll tell you about what’s new in Paris, London or my favorite little Islands in faraway places. And yes, I’m planning another Haute Travels Beauty event and fashionable night out event so stay tuned.

Haute Healthy Hair for 2012

As you know, I started my hair evolution in 2011 with healthy hair strategist Robin Groover. We began working together last spring and the results are amazing. I’m completely Keratin-free and I will never put any kind of chemical back in my hair again. (Although I do add mininal color to keep my roots in check ;)

My golden brown tresses are all natural and extremely healthy and hydrated. My hair has grown tremendously over the last few months. It’s also a lot stronger and fuller thanks to frequent hydration therapy and Groove Therapy products.

In a few more months, my hair will get longer thanks to frequent trims and custom shampoo and conditioning treatments. Our goal is to grow it out to the middle of my back with lots of bounce and shine. Although, I'm in the hair salon about every 7 to 10 days on average... I have noticed that even if I can't get to the salon, my hair will still maintain shine and movement.

If I could give advice to girls who are struggling with their natural hair... I would suggest that you contact Robin at Too Groovy Salon in Midtown in Atlanta. She's the truth when it comes to beautiful, healthy hair first and style second. She is not only a hair stylist and product specialist but she really cares about hair and educating the consumer on individual hair needs. I've had a lot of great hair stylists take care of my hair but I have never had a stylist that invested as much as Robin... she's amazing!

A Haute New Year!

Every New Year brings about an opportunity to start out fresh and explore something new and different. As 2012 gets underway, I’ve discovered things that are moving me closer to a life that I had one only imagined. And thanks to some wonderful news and signs from the universe… things are well on their way to coming true. But the journey is the real story because just when you start to doubt, you change the course of your life. If you make a decision to stay positive and ride the wave, as my friend Crystal tells me… magic and miracles really do happen.

As you move closer to your true self, you’ll discover that a lot of things and people that once occupied space in your life will suddenly be removed. There’s a season for everything and a reason for it all… if you pay attention you’ll understand why things move progressively in your favor once you open your heart. Just know that no matter what happens—you’re equipped to handle it.

Starting today focus on your destination, listen to your inner voice and let your intuition guide you. When you start to see visions of your life ahead that’s a sign that everything is coming true. Change is in the air… and last Monday’s full moon confirmed it because it was a “wishing” moon. Everything that you’ve always wanted is within reach… you just have to trust and believe that you can have it. The choice is always yours. Here’s to a haute New Year!

What I learned from Sam Fine is HAUTE!

Sometimes we meet people who inspire us in ways that we’ve never expected. I can honestly say that Sam Fine is more than an accomplished celebrity makeup artist to me. He’s a great role model for girls in any field… and the magic that surrounds him can easily rub off on you.

In just the brief time that I spent with Sam, during his visit to Atlanta to headline my first Haute Travels Beauty event, I got to meet the guy who is intuitive, smart, funny and so professional. I still remember our conversations in those spare moments before and after the beauty event that always left me with something to think about.

One thing that really stood out, Sam kept telling me to think beyond 2011… because the work of 2012 was already underway. He encouraged me to celebrate accomplishments even when venturing out to do something for the very first time. And he always seems to know when there was something more on my mind. I love that he follows his heart and takes on projects that speak to him or excites him in some way. After all, isn’t that what passion is all about?

I’ve never met anyone who was more generous with his knowledge, wisdom and time than Sam. And I’m thrilled that I got to meet someone that made me think about my next steps six months from now instead of just tomorrow. I’m especially excited that this wasn’t a one-time encounter on a red carpet or step and repeat moment, but a genuine conversation with someone who makes you think and inspires you to dream bigger. Thank you Sam!

Who's Who is Haute!

The unveiling of the 13th edition of Who’s Who in Black Atlanta was so much fun particularly since I’m profiled in the book ;). The reception took place at Twelve Hotel at Atlantic Station before about 500 guests. The turnout was amazing and everyone appeared to have had a wonderful time.

As I flipped through the book, I was inspired by so many of the stories told throughout from entrepreneurs to corporate executives who have done wonderful things in their chosen fields. The evening also included an opportunity to network with some of Atlanta’s most influential people along with up and coming movers and shakers over cocktails.

It’s an honor to have been selected for the book. I would like to thank Real Times Media Creative and Operations Director Tamara Allen for selecting me to be in the book along with a few of my friends. This has been a wonderful way to end the year.

Hosting my very first Haute Travels Beauty event featuring Sam Fine has been the highlight of the year. After picking the perfect team and bringing Mr. Fine on board everything fell into place. I’m a story teller so making sure that the event offered an experience was a priority. Every girl left with her own unique story after getting personal time with the man they most admire in the makeup industry, Mr. Sam Fine. He was engaging, smart, witty, but most of all authentic. He was the perfect complement to a dream come true.

I’m also happy to say that we raised awareness for Living Water for Girls among those in the beauty industry. This is an amazing organization that works to help little girls who look like us escape the world of child sex exploitation and trafficking. It’s my mission to bring the worlds of beauty and philanthropy together to make a difference… and be a Force of Beauty because being pretty is not enough.

For all the girls and guys who came out to support Haute Travels Beauty, I’m excited to have made some of your dreams come true. I’m not a beauty industry insider-but rather a girl who likes to play with makeup. It was very special for me to have you girls say, “Thank you for what you’re doing for our industry.” I’m humbled by all of your support… particularly San Tara and Jennifer who Tweeted, posted info on Facebook and emailed their friends the information about the beauty seminar… and I’ve never met them! But, they are the kind of friends that every girl should have support and invest in her goals, dreams and desires.

I’m not sure what the next Haute Travels Beauty event will look like but it will be HAUTE! My team of dream makers will be there to make sure that everything goes off perfectly… thank you Mary, Ernest, Sam, Robin, Lori, Gwynnis, Jayda, Nubia, Lydia, Crystal, Lisa, Connie, Yvette and my mom for all of your support!

My beauty dream team includes industry legends… Celebrity Makeup Artist Sam Fine was on hand to teach makeup technique and offer business advice to the girls attending my Haute Travels Beauty seminar on October 16th at the beautiful Ernest Washington Studios. When Sam touched my face, I almost died! I’ve admired his work for so many years; I could never have a beauty event without his genius.

Hair whisper, Robin Groover has turned my sultry brunette tresses into haute, healthy hair that’s all natural. You’ll hear more about my hair evolution in the coming months as we work on various projects promoting healthy, natural hair. Living Water for Girls Ambassador in Hollywood

This year has presented amazing opportunities for me to make a difference. Just a few months ago, I signed on as an Ambassador for Living Water for Girls, a program designed to provide rehabilitation services and a safe home for American girls who have been victims of prostitution and sex exploitation.

Last month, I was asked to accompany Living Water for Girls Founder Lisa Williams to Los Angeles where she was honored by Variety and Lifetime Television during the Power of Women luncheon along with Eva Longoria, Mary J Blige, Annette Bening, Lea Michele, Stacey Snider and Olivia Wilde for their outstanding philanthropic work.

As Ambassador, I worked with the ladies from L’Oreal Paris who brought Lisa Williams out to Hollywood to raise awareness for our cause. The beauty company also teamed up with Designer Judith Leiber who created crystal lipstick cases that 10 celebrities signed for auction with all proceeds benefitting Living Water for Girls
I can’t tell you how much this powerful group of women in Hollywood (and men too) embraced our cause and pledged their support. The heads of studios like DreamWorks and company executives from Skechers Entertainment to various A-list celebrities believe in the work that’s taking place at Living Water for Girls… and want to help.

Haute Pedi at The Beverly Wilshire

When in Beverly Hills I can’t help but get in a little glam girl time. The girls over at The Beverly Wilshire invited me in to get a pedicure in their new nail suite. I couldn’t say no… so I made my way to the posh and distinctive spa serving the needs of Haute Travels girls as they jet in and out of Hollywood.

The $90 pedicure took about 45 minutes after a stimulating foot bath and massage… my nail tech filed, buffed and smooth my nails to perfection. During my visit, I checked out the latest mags with a complimentary iPad. It’s the only way to catch up on the latest news in the world of fashion and beauty for guests at the Beverly Wilshire.

When my services came to an end, I spent time sipping champagne on the patio while the pink Chanel polish on my toes dried. It was nothing short of bliss, while I sat above Rodeo Drive contemplating my next move. It’s a haute travels girl life but somebody has to live it!

I love hanging out in Los Angeles so when I have a chance to head west--I do! I was in LA on a philanthropic mission but I did have time to meet friends for dinner and meetings with my American Express prepaid card in hand. I also met two of my Haute Travels followers while in town.

On this day, I just wrapped a meeting with a swimsuit designer who creates sexy suits for curvy girls. While walking through the lobby of The Beverly Hilton, I noticed the flowers matched my dress so I had to pose for a picture.

Being in Hollywood means that you can’t help but notice that some people are supper skinny. But for girls who rock their curves, we also turn heads because we tend to be more secure in our skin and our confidence shows.

When I walked through the lobby of the hotel… heads turned and people smiled. I think the color of my dress along with my glow brightened their day! And that’s HAUTE!

The Playboy Club Party at Vanquish!

Sometimes girls just want to have fun at The Playboy Club or at least a pop-up venue created to celebrate the launch of the new TV show on NBC. On Wednesday, some of Atlanta’s insiders turned out at the newly opened Vanquish Night Club to rub elbows with others paying homage to the golden age of the infamous 1960’s Chicago club.

The private event was presented by Rolling OUT gifting arriving guests with keys to the sexy night spot along with sample cocktails from Grey Goose Vodka or a simple glass of cranberry juice for those of us who are non-drinkers. There were also Playboy bunnies on hand to mingle and pose for pictures. But the best part of the evening… the atmosphere offered a perfect backdrop with a safari-theme allowing guests to relax and enjoy the music with their friends creating a seductive night to remember.

My Haute Summer Travel Beauty Tips!

When traveling for business or pleasure a Haute Travels girl knows looking good with minimal effort for maximum appeal is part of our travel package. When preparing for a trip, some things are just as important as my ticket, passport and carryon bag—my haute look.

Here are eight tips that will keep you looking haute.

-I love a great rosewater spritz to keep my skin hydrated while traveling by plane.

-Haute hair is a must-have so I keep my brown tresses hydrated with frequent steam therapy sessions to keep my strands from drying and breaking.

-When tanning in Miami, Las Vegas, the Caribbean or any where that’s warm and sunny, I always follow up with an after sun moisturizer and self-tanner to seal in my glow. My favorite is by Clarins.

-I can’t leave home without perfectly manicured toes… although when staying at some resorts with great spas I make it a point to hit them first for a fresh pedicure.

-A great lip gloss keeps my kissers fresh and moist while adding color even when I go nude my lips stay haute.

-A great bronzing powder makes my face pop with a fresh flawless look.

-Great brows are important in adding instant glam.

-No matter where I go during the summer, I travel with Skin So Soft by Avon to keep the bugs away.

The Beauty of Business in Las Vegas

When it’s time to get away for a beauty event in Las Vegas… there’s just one thing to do—make it happen. CosmoProf is one of the largest international beauty shows in the world. There is so much to see and sample in the world of makeup, nails, and hair. It really is a girly girl’s paradise. Every new trend, product and tool is right here for beauty industry-insiders to sample.

When my days at CosmoProf North America wrapped over at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center it was on to The Trump Hotel for poolside relaxation and networking. That’s right… the beauty of business never stops! But it doesn’t have to because the opportunity to expand networks and net worth is always a top priority.

While in Vegas, I didn’t get to hit the party scene like I did a few months ago because this trip was all about research and development for a Haute Travels project that I haven’t made public yet, but stay tuned. However, I did make time for dinner over at Caesars Palace with brand strategists from Zone Management, Lila Brown of Ella Bee PR and natural hair guru Robin Groover. But, as you can imagine, when a group of smart people get together they talk about what else… the evolution of rap music! And the guy with all of the insight was a white guy from Boston! It was the most fun that I’ve had in a while. I love multicultural connections.

My Haute Hair Evolution!

Two months ago natural hair guru Robin Groover (yes, that Robin Groover from Sutera and Too Groovy Hair Salons) launched a campaign to take me from keratin to completely natural. She promised me that in 90 days she could make my hair stronger, longer and more manageable. I’m thinking really?? We’re now about 60 days in and my hair has fallen under her spell! It’s like somebody opened the flood gates and now my hair is cascading down my back just past my shoulders.

So what’s the secret? Robin keeps my hair hydrated with weekly stream treatments and she only uses her own products… Groove Therapy to customize my personal hair care needs. She’s also growing my keratin ends out and trims them every three to four weeks. I’m absolutely in love with the results.

So what’s next? Robin is growing my hair out about three more inches and changing the color. By the time my hair affair is over… I’ll be completely natural with haute hair that’s way too groovy for words!

My Haute Life!

There’s so much for me to smile about today. I’m stretching and growing in ways that I’ve always dreamed about. There is also so much more of me to reveal and that’s what makes my brand bigger than what you see on the blog.

So what’s in the works… a beauty project with a fabulous new Haute Travels investor, an escape with my followers to an exotic locale for a fashion event mixed with a beauty seminar and collaborations with other great brands that see the growing influence of my personal brand.

Although, the blog is quickly growing into a lifestyle brand it’s still my personal labor of love. It really does make me smile when I think about its evolution from a place where I could write about my travels to the site that’s launched an entire new career and business opportunity doing things that I get excited about.

All that I can say is stay tuned because the best is yet to come! And don’t forget to check out Ocean Style Magazine for an upcoming profile on me… that’s right, I’m getting international press! I’m thinking that Paris is next! Now that’s Haute!

72 Hours of Solitude at The Half Moon Resort

In my world, travel is not always as glamorous as it seems. But there are those spare moments in which I do get-a-way and it’s life-changing. Generally, this happens when I can just go some place and relax on a beach. I suppose it’s a Pisces thing.

Recently, I was in Jamaica for a variety of reasons… none of which turned out the way they were planned. But I soon learned that was the way it was intended… the universe had other ideas. I needed to spend some time reflecting on thoughts that were occupying my mind. So I headed to the exclusive Half Moon Resort in Montego Bay to connect with my mind, body and soul.

In just 72 hours, I had time to think about a subject that brought fear, anxiety and excitement to my life. I had no internet and occasional signals on my blackberry that kept me connected to life outside of my cottage. For a minute, I thought that I was being punked! But somehow I stayed semi-connected with a friend who helped me sort out my feelings and devise a plan to move forward in an area of my life I usually avoid. But again, isolation doesn’t allow you to escape what’s on your mind… and neither does the exclusivity of paradise.

My cottage was amazing… every morning I opened the French doors and took in fresh air with an ocean breeze that offered a level of peace that escapes those of us who live in metropolitan cities. The simplicity of it all was priceless and so was the privacy.

Tranquility and solitude became my confidants allowing me the peace of mind to conceptualize a number of stories for my blog. But Ironically, I can’t write a lot when I’m not in the confines of my home. I have to be completely settled. But the creativity that’s sparked when I’m away allows the words and thoughts to pour out when I am in front of my computer. I suppose that’s the method to my madness as a writer, but it works.

So what did my three days at the Half Moon Resort offer… the luxury of time, peace, and a view of the world that captured my thoughts in a way that few places have the ability to do. I had time to purge any thought that made me feel as if I was not in control of my own choices. I changed my thinking… as a result things that seemed out of the realm of possibility became Godwinks. The beauty of a Godwink allows you to receive a sign of affirmation that you’re on the right path and eradicate uncertainty and worry.

Sometimes all that you have to do is search your soul for the answers to life’s most perplexing and provocative questions. Every single time that I do that… I always get the answer that brings everything else into perfect alignment and clarity. The lesson—when facing a challenge, settle your spirit so that you can see through it and rise above it.

While sitting on the beach looking at the Caribbean Sea… I surrendered all the things that brought me uncertainly and traded them for the knowledge that I’m shifting and growing. The vision for my life has never been clearer. The value and worth that I place on myself determines the people and experiences that I attract into my life… and nothing is more powerful or beautiful.

Once I stepped outside the cottage door for the last time… I was confident that I was embracing a heart and mind at ease inspiring me to take a risk and see what happens.

Laughter is HAUTE!

This morning a friend’s call got me out of bed… catching up can be good for the soul. But one thing that resonated with me was her observation about my life. I’ve known her for more than 20 years and she’s always been extremely honest. So it’s no surprise when she told me that she observed something about me that I never thought about… my ability to make laughter a staple in my life. She said, “I saw you in a photo with someone and the two of you were laughing!” And based on that fact alone… she concluded that we must have a great friendship. Well, it happened to be somebody that I had just met the day before and even though that photo was taken months ago during one of my trips… she’s right. As I’ve said before, travel opens up a unique opportunity for me to meet all kinds of people. Because I enjoy meeting people, I tend to draw like-minded people into my zone and if we click or vibe… we stay in touch!

My friend also said that the next time she gets into a relationship; my photo reminded her that there has to be a degree of laughter that’s part of open, honest communication. So now, she’s got me to thinking about that… I’m always laughing at something so for me it wasn’t anything that I thought about. But after that conversation, I realized that laughing out loud with people is the best way to stay healthy, happy and sane. And when you’re in a relationship with someone special—it has to be a requirement. My relationship with men has always been one where I can be comfortable enough to laugh at myself. Silly? No, but fun and light-hearted conversation that’s good for the heart. Oh well, maybe a degree of silliness! Lol Who am I kidding? Life is serious enough so make it count by filling your circle with people who make you laugh and smile no matter what’s going on around you because you just never know who may be watching. Embracing the Love of Friendship is HAUTE!

When it’s time to escape, it’s time to get away to some place haute, but sometimes no matter where I am… I can’t escape what’s on my mind. When something weights heavily, I find that I’m forced to deal with it. I’m not the type to compartmentalize like some people. But when real emotions start to come out… I’m grateful that my friends lift my spirits to make me stronger and wiser. As a result, I can approach whatever is unpleasant or that lesson in progress with clarity. Their strength offers a shoulder and the understanding that I have to resist the temptation of trying to control something that I have no control over so I learn to let go and trust the process.

I’m one of the lucky ones to have a friend who is half way around the world call me on a tropical island to say something that empowers me or laugh out loud at another friend who sends me text messages with jokes mixed with “real talk” to help me understand that my life is shifting in ways that I may not understand, but I’m better for it. One of my friends of many years always asks the same question… “What’s the lesson?”

It’s an amazing feeling to know that no matter where I am… I’m never really alone. I’ve always found that friendship and time are the two biggest investments that I can make in people. And you never know when you’ll need to cash in so I try hard to pick my friends carefully. When the storms come along… you’ll need someone to shield you from whatever makes you hurt… with a promise that everything will be alright again. Your real friends show up to support… show empathy, compassion and love. They guide you through the disappointments of life to carve out a place of acceptance, while pointing you in a new direction… helping you get back to the right path. But they also understand that what works for them may not work for me so they allow me to have my own process and victories… they always say examine your heart… and that’s when something remarkable happens. As the process unfolds, the confusion, disappointments and hurts unravel to reveal a life full of endless possibilities to remind me of my own specialness and blessings. “The past always serves the future and a foundation for all the days that follow.” So I’m trying harder to live and love in the moment… and when the storms come along learn to dance in the rain.

To my friends, you know who you are… you matter to me more than you know. Everyone deserves friends like you.

Being Beautiful is HAUTE!

There’s something about a man who tells me that I’m beautiful… he makes me smile. I’ve heard a lot of conversation lately about an article that expresses a particular take on whether black women are beautiful. I must be one of a few women who thought nothing of it. In fact, I had a conversation with a few girlfriends who had different opinions about it. I just really don’t get plugged into debates like that because it’s pointless. People can have the right to their own thoughts but at the end of the day that old saying rings true “beauty is in the eye of the beholder.”

Well, over the course of my life I’ve had men tell me that I was attractive to them. I’ll never forget when some of them (who are fathers with daughters) would pay me the highest compliment… they told me that they wanted their girls to grow up and be just like me. When a man tells you that—it’s mind blowing because men are extremely protective of their baby girls. I often asked them why and generally it had to do with a couple of things… the fact that I live life on my own terms and I value and validate black men who allow me into their world uncensored. They respect and value my friendship often as a result of unspoken shared experiences… it’s about loyalty, trust, and bringing peace into a world full of drama and rejection.

Recently, someone reminded me that I was “Beautiful” to him and made a point to say you’re enough just the way that you are so don’t try to change based on what you think someone else wants you to be. Well, when I saw his note it made me think about something else that I read recently… when a man says you’re sexy; he’s telling you that you’re physically desirable. But when he tells you that you’re pretty… it means that you’re attractive to him. However, when he gets past those two things and looks into your heart and soul—you’re beautiful to him. Being beautiful to a man means that your entire being makes you extraordinary in ways that really matter. You’re not only pretty and sexy but you glow! Your confidence, inner vixen, charm and intelligence is a compliment to even the sexiest man on the planet—you enhance him! Think about it... why opt to use the word beautiful instead of pretty or cute :)?

When I mentioned these thoughts to my female friends they came back with… “Do you need a man to tell you that you’re beautiful to feel it?” In response, no, I don’t need a man to tell me that because my confidence level is pretty high plus my mother and friends co-sign often, but let’s face it if a man that matters to you or that you find attractive or desirable offers a level of validation that every human-being innately seeks (because we all want to be loved and accepted as we are)… then that’s powerful. Sometimes I don’t feel pretty or cute but when someone who sees me on one of my “what I think is my not so good day” says to me I think that you look amazing… it validates me and instantly changes my view of myself. We all need cheerleaders. I think that if more black men or men who love black women told us that we’re beautiful… articles that seek to reinforce the opposite would never have some women questioning their worth, value or beauty… it wouldn’t stir anger because we already know those who truly matter will step up through their words and actions… and silence those critics . The focus instead would be on stepping into our own light and allowing our inner and outer beauty to shine with the men who love us smiling at just the thought of us!

No matter where I travel in the world, I represent the women who are thicker than super models, but just as beautiful.

My butt is bigger than most unless you live in the ATL... where thicker girls with hour glass figures rule! And that’s alright with me. I would often hide my assets with clothes that conceal but one day a man who made my heart smile asked, “Why do you hide it under a dress?” So when this guy who is super haute, sexy and smart encouraged me to let my curves out―I did! I figured if he was cosigning… I’m all over it!

Southern girls with killer curves, ample thighs, full lips and hips that sway know that the secret to being a confident woman starts with the mind. We also know that for those who walk behind us… we inspire curiosity and acceptance. But for those who can’t get past our apple bottoms (two words) don’t hate!

As I travel the globe, I’m rocking my curves… whether in New York City, London, Paris or the Caribbean. I hope to represent girls like me who once thought that containing our best asset was the best way to be taken seriously because you want men to look at you (above the neck) when you’re talking. But as I’ve learned it’s all about how you present the total package… be unapologetically the best you possible. So go ahead be a bombshell with brains! Rock your curves, celebrate what makes you different and watch the world take notice.

My Haute Thoughts on My Value, Respect and Worth

I’ve come to the conclusion that some relationships must end, particularly when you put your heart and soul into a story and your work is taken for granted. It seems like the week has been extremely long but when the truth comes out the best thing to do is face it. As such, I’ve decided that I can no longer work with a publisher who doesn’t value my contribution, my work or my time. Recently, I noticed that I had not been paid for an article that I wrote nearly six months ago even though it had been published. Under my contract agreement, my check was about 20 days late and no one in accounts payable with the magazine would return my emails, acknowledge receipt of my invoice or give me any idea of when to expect payment. As an independent consultant and writer, I can’t operate my business or life in limbo. So I took a tougher approach and sent a letter outlining my intentions on collection. Well, that got the attention of the publisher who decided to defend his breach of contract actions with his advertisers had not paid him explanation. My response, “I don’t have a contract with your advertisers.”

The entire incident started a conversation among my friends and I about the dynamics between men and women and how they measure value and worth. Men generally ask for what they want in business and relationships and get it. While, women (typically) take the approach that someone will recognize our hard work and reward us for it… no conversation needed on our part. But that’s not how it works… unless you’re willing to ask for what you need and deserve because you understand your value—you’re not going to get it. Yes, it’s taking a risk because people who don’t value you will show you who they are immediately. They may not want to work with you once you make your case. But in my mind, that’s fine because if you can’t honor your agreement then I can’t work with you anyway.

In my situation, the publisher turned no communication into “where should I send your money” within 24 hours. As a result, my relationship with the magazine has ended because there was a breach of contract more than once, but the value of the experience is priceless. I think that when you take a stand, make your case and prepare to walk away from a relationship that doesn’t honor or value you—you win. By not being afraid to have the conversation, I not only got the answers and results that I sought but I got rid of the stress and drama that bad relationships bring on. You can say this is how I stay healthy, wealthy and wise!

My advice to women who face similar challenges… know and value your worth, don’t be afraid to have the tough conversations, take your emotions out of it… and never be afraid to walk away from a relationship or business deal that doesn’t serve you well. Letting go opens the door to someone who will respect you and pay you on time!

A Midnight Dinner Party is Haute!

A late night dinner party hosted by Atlanta Attorney Dan Meachum and Ludacris was held at the entertainer’s Midtown restaurant Straits. Several dozen Atlantans including the mayor and Congressman John Lewis turned out to recognize the contributions of civil rights heroes.

The dinner menu consisted of six appetizers and starters including spare ribs, chicken lollipops, calamari and crispy wantons. When the main course came out it blew me away. Filet mignon, Origami sea bass and lobster tails along with lemon grass chicken were all amazing.

By the time, the Georgia Peach and Empire State Cheese Cake came out… I had to get it to go! I couldn’t eat another thing so Ludacris’ mom Roberta made sure that I had my dessert box in hand as I walked out the door around 2 AM!

Straits is a Singaporean Restaurant with a sophisticated look and feel. It’s become a local fave among select entertainers and local celebrities in the ATL.

Bahamas in Atlanta at Tyler Perry Studios Simply Haute

Last Week, I had the pleasure of attending The Bahamas in Atlanta event at Tyler Perry Studios (TPS). It was amazing! Officials from the Bahamas Tourism Board transformed TPS into a Bahamian retreat. More than 400 people turned out for the invitation-only affair to sample Bahamian cuisine and culture.

The Minister of Tourism and Aviation Vincent Vanderpool-Wallace spoke earlier in the day during a private media luncheon at the Four Seasons Hotel Atlanta… and then played host once again for the evening event along with U.S. Ambassador to The Islands of the Bahamas Nicole Avant who served as the keynote speaker.

Vanderpool-Wallace makes a compelling story of why Atlantans should consider the islands of the Bahamas as their next vacation destination with more than 700 options… there is plenty to see and do in the tropical paradise. It’s absolutely one of my favorite places to visit in the world… because we all know that It’s Better in the Bahamas! I would also venture to say that Tyler Perry would probably agree… after all he owns his own island along with film star Johnny Depp! Now that’s beyond HAUTE!

Advice to a Haute Travels Girl

Yesterday, I got a wonderful email from a Haute Travels follower who is wrestling with the notion of leaving the world that offers financial security to one that truly makes her happy. So she asked me… How I did it? When I first read the email, I wasn’t sure if I should give advice to someone that I didn’t know. But as a Pisces girl, I threw caution to the wind and told her my story.

Here’s what I said…

Hi!

I really appreciate your support for Haute Travels... and I love feedback!

Well, to answer your question I thought about leaving television years before but I didn't because I was in my comfort zone... perhaps fear of the unknown played a role. But after a series of things that took place I was able to leave the business and explore something new. There was a bigger plan at work for my life and every excuse to not do what made me happy disappeared when the job was no longer an issue.

I wanted to write for magazines so I did some research and pitched a travel mag that targeted African American travelers. They loved my pitch and my life as a travel writer was born.

But, I didn't rest there because freelance writing didn't offer the financial rewards that I deserved. So I started to consult with a multi cultural advertising agency as a PR, media and communications expert and coupled that with speech writing. Working as an independent consultant gave me the freedom that working in an office didn't... time to travel. Keep in mind, I had no experience in PR or advertising but I brought value as a seasoned journalist, great thought partner and writer to their world. I learned their language and used it to build my skill level and professional experience.

If you're seeing a pattern that's because at the heart of everything that I do... I'm a story teller. I just discovered new and different ways to reposition and reinvent myself using skills that I already have to do things that feed my creativity and my love for travel... while affording me a lifestyle that makes me happy.

I've discovered that as I stay true to myself, my loves and my sanity... I attract people who support, inspire and encourage my growth. People who bring the best out of you will become more valuable than you will ever know. Their strength will support you when you feel like giving up. But first, you have to take a leap of faith and everything falls into place. Just believe in yourself and keep going.

Think about what you love to do and whether you have a skill level that supports it. Create a plan and seek out opportunities that encourage calculated risks. Don't abandon your responsibilities but follow your heart and take your brain along with you. Create a life that's free of things that weigh you down like debt or unhealthy relationships.

You may encounter obstacles but they don't have to derail you... instead use them to make you better and smarter about how you'll make your dreams come true. I'm still learning and in some ways starting over since I relocated to Atlanta. But I'm still in the game doing what I love to do and making it work. I dream bigger because I don't know how not to. There are so many people who believe in me and see me doing things that even I had not imagined but it's possible. I have friends who just don't encourage me but invest in my dreams.

I wouldn't say walk away from your life or job... but rather reposition yourself so that you can live a life that makes you happy.

Haute Stuff: Meeting the Neelys!

As a Haute Travels girl I’m not the type who spends a lot of time in the kitchen although I love good food. So it may be surprising to know that I spent today at the Metropolitan Cooking and Entertainment Show in Atlanta.

My mom came along because she loves cooking and picking up a great cookbook. But she also loves the Neelys… she watches their show Down Home with the Neelys on The Food Network and even picked up their cookbook. If you love good food and entertainment… this power couple puts on a great show while preparing an amazing meal. I have never watched a cooking show and laughed so much while being taught how to grill pork chops. Gina is a clown! She was so much fun to watch and the way that she and Pat engaged the audience was sheer comedy. But more importantly, I love the example that they set when it comes to African American couples who truly love and respect each other.

I loved when one woman asked Gina how to prepare a meal to make a man “put a ring on it.” Gina told her that it depends on the man… but what they eat may not be the same thing that we should be eating. After all, you gotta learn how to keep him so cooking, staying attractive and making him happy is what she calls multitasking! She told the girls in the audience to hit her up on facebook to learn more as she started her Beyonce routine!

After the show, I surprised my mom by taking her backstage to meet them. Let’s just say she was so excited especially when both Pat and Gina gave her a hug and a kiss southern-style. So I want to say thanks guys for making my mother’s day.

Now you might ask what’s next for the couple with an appetite for food, fun and affection… a new restaurant, Neelys Barbecue Parlor with partners Merchant’s Hospitality, Inc. set to open in New York City in June! I can’t wait to check it out… I’m sure it will be HAUTE!

The restaurateurs also operate three family-run barbecue restaurants in Tennessee with two more in Memphis. They are also writing another cookbook.

A Haute new restaurant makes its musical debut in Atlanta… do officially opens this week! Last night, I had a blast with friends and Haute Travels followers at the pre-opening of do (pronounced dough) in Midtown. So many people turned out to congratulate owners Christian Ruffin and his wife Nacasha on their new venture... their dream coming to life was inspiring to just about everybody.

Ruffin has used sound and theatrical lighting to integrate technology into restaurant design for an experience unlike any other in Atlanta. do marries science with substance… guests use Apple iPads to change the music, place orders without having to wait for a server and going paperless means going GREEN. You can even call for your car with the touch of the screen! Ruffin really gave a lot of thought to the atmosphere… iPads are everywhere, video on walls, good food and lots of fun flows throughout the two-story industrial building transformed into the new it-spot. The all-white furnishing and waterfalls remind me of Miami meeting Atlanta.

If you’re looking to meet friends to catch up over salads, specialty pizzas and desserts―do is the spot for you. The Ruffins have also made sure that there’s something for everybody… they even have gluten-free pies!

If you like Al fresco dining just head to the top level and sit on the terrace to view the skyline with a glass of wine. I sat out there with Tammie (@TalkingwithTami) and Shane (@IamFAshionWeak) for girl talk, sipped Chardonnay and let our hair blow in the gentle breeze of a beautiful spring evening in our favorite southern city, while the music kept the vibe haute… think NYC meets the ATL!

It was my pleasure to attend the 10th Annual Michael Jordan Celebrity Invitational in Las Vegas... where Jordan and Toni Kukoc once again walked away winners. Each took home $20,000 for the charity of their choice.

The tournament called the Aria Resort and Casino its new home after years in the Bahamas. The game was played at the beautiful Shadow Creek golf courses. This year’s tournament allowed the public access to the renowned Shadow Creek reportedly for the very first time.

Jordan didn’t disappoint he brought out the big stars from the world of entertainment, sports and business. Each foursome was paired with a different celebrity. Since the tournament’s inception, it has raised over $5 million for a variety of worthy causes. This year, MJCI raised money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the James R. Jordan Foundation, Cats Care and the Nevada Cancer Institute.

Celebrities spotted on the course… Model Gabriel Aubry, Actress Salli Richardson, The Dream, Actor Hill Harper, former football player Richard Dent, Actor Flex Alexander, sports super stars Wayne Gretzky and Michael Jordan.

Haute Poolside Fun in Las Vegas!

Poolside parties are the best way to hang out with old and new acquaintances. I love Liquid Lounge at Aria because it comes with a DJ and cabana! My weekend trip to Las Vegas was so much fun! I ended up handing Jamie Foxx my cell phone to chat with a mutual friend (who had not spoken with him in 10 years because they lost touch) and became the subject of a rap song with Chris “Kid” Reid from Kid N Play. He said that my brightly colored green dress reminded him of a bag of skittles!

We spent the afternoon just grooving to the music, talking about all kinds of things including relationship dynamics with Jamie and Chris suggested that bring I bring my Haute Travels to Los Angles. I really loved the company and can’t wait to catch up with this crew again.

So who else was in the Michael Jordan cabana on Saturday? Christina Milian, Shanice, Flex Alexander and Comedian Craig Robinson were some of the coolest, most down to earth people that I’ve met.

Haute Parties in Las Vegas

If you’re looking for a great party—head to Las Vegas! I was in Sin City over the weekend to cover the Michael Jordan Celebrity Invitational golf tournament but somehow I ended up at a few haute spots shaking my groove thing. Now, because the parties were thrown at some really cool clubs by members of the Jordan team or Black Hollywood, I didn’t take a lot of photos so that what happens in Vegas—well stays in Vegas.

But I can tell you that I loved the clubs in Vegas… all of them have dancers in custom that made the atmosphere hip and happening. My first stop was Haze at Aria where MJ and a few friends (actors, athletes and power brokers) danced the night away in a private section for insiders only… yes, I was standing in the middle of everything… before the night was over former football player Richard Dent gave me his seat just in time for Busta Rhymes to come out!

On Saturday night, Bivett and I hit Vanity for Champagne before heading over to Tao where Jamie Foxx hosted the hottest party of the night! Nobody throws a party like Mr. Foxx… and a number of his friends flew in from LA to party with him. You just never know who may be dancing next to you… and the best thing—we’re all just having fun so it’s no big deal. By the time the party was over, it was 4 AM and I had to get to the airport for my 6 AM flight back to Atlanta.

My Haute Tips if you’re partying in Las Vegas… plan it so that you arrive in town when there’s a big event where somebody Haute will throw a party.

My Haute Thoughts on Friendship

When it comes to friendship it should be a two-way street, but lately I’m finding most people don’t get it. Since I’ve taken on a more visible role as a journalist by starting a blog and entering into the fascinating world of social media, I seem to attract people who think that they can extract my contacts and resources without giving something back. I find these people to be opportunists and incapable of being a true friend. So when the truth reveals itself… I take notes. I have learned to love or like people from a distance and rid myself of anything that’s toxic. I wouldn’t say these people are bad, but they have misguided intentions and may not value and protect friendship the same way that I do. They see my network and start adding up the net worth to figure out how they can benefit from it with no return on investment. As a result, I chose not to spend my time with them. It’s not always easy to draw such hard lines but it’s necessary to maintain my sanity.

My tried and true friends tell me that I’m too trusting and extremely kind… I can’t help it—I’m a Pisces and we tend to wear our hearts on our sleeves. But we’re not pushovers! So when I start to notice your pattern, I course correct.

This is what you should know about me… I work smarter so I can play hard. I travel the world because it inspires me to be better than I am. I fiercely protect my friendships because they matter to me. I will never allow someone to use me and be ok with it. I create my own opportunities and help others when I can. A Haute Birthday Celebration!

When I decided to meet a small group of friends for an intimate birthday celebration at the beautiful St. Regis Hotel in Atlanta… I didn’t imagine that I would have so much fun! It was like an evening of girlfriends meet Sex and the City!

You just never know how much you’ll learn about your friends and yourself when you open up and share your past, present and future. Now, while what we discussed at the St. Regis stays within the walls of the wine room, I can tell you that we laughed so hard—we cried!

We also shared our stories and secrets to our individual success and what we’d like to tackle next. Each one of the girls has decided to try something new in 2011… as smart women we’re always shifting and growing as our journey through life becomes more focused.

Our girls just having fun interaction caught the attention of a number of people who were in the hotel meeting friends or having a drink because a few of them came over to say hello to us. Our positive energy was infectious… and so was our Hauteness. We even had our own security detail!

As I ring in another birthday… I’ve never felt more alive or fabulous than I do right now. It’s true… I seem to get better with age. I’m stronger, wiser and more open than I’ve ever been. My relationships are sound and my circle of friends inspire and empower me every day. I’m so grateful to have the love of friends and family in a world where so many people have lost hope, faith and themselves.

But I’m not ready to wrap my birthday celebrations; I still have engagements in New York City and Miami!

Haute State of the Art Airport Terminal Unveiled in Nassau

The who’s who in Nassau came out Friday and walked the red carpet to see the unveiling of the new terminal at the Lynden Pindling International Airport (LPIA). Prime Minster the Rt. Hon. Hubert Ingraham made the reveal to a crowd of 1500 dignitaries and other guests, including Haute Travels!

This is the first phase of a $400 million dollar redevelopment project for the airport… the new state of the art facility is now the best in the Bahamas and Caribbean. The government is delighted by the “successful” conclusion of the first phase of the redevelopment of the LPIA, “a job undertaken and completed on time and within budget,” says The Prime Minister.

The night was amazing… the terminal came alive with music and fabulous people. The party moved up stairs to the gate area where we feasted on a variety of food including roast beef, chicken, shrimp, and a potato bar. A few hours later we moved back down stairs for a private concert by rock star Lenny Kravitz!

The new USA departure terminal is gorgeous! I can’t wait to return to the island and walk through the new terminal for the very second time.

My Haute Sailing Adventure in the Bahamas

On Saturday, I spent my afternoon at sea on a luxury yacht in the Bahamas. It was so HAUTE! We sailed around Rose, Nassau and Paradise Islands. We even ventured over to the Atlantis where the super rich came in on what else—their private boats.

Our afternoon was full of fun, sun and a wonderful lunch of roast beef, salad, lobster tails and rice and beans. We even had an open bar to go with our cool conversation!

It was such a wonderful way to spend a Saturday afternoon sailing through the Nassau harbor while Vaughn told us all about the new development that’s headed to the downtown area with new shops, restaurants and so much more. I can hardly wait… because I wonder who will sit alongside some of my favorite boutiques—Gucci, Fendi, David Yurman and John Bull on the famous Bay Street? Hmmm

I love the beautiful island of Nassau for so many reasons. I was just in the Bahamas over the weekend and I got to spend time ocean side reflecting on a number of things. But more importantly, I got to enjoy warm tropical breezes, crystal clear turquoise water and stunning views of Nassau and Paradise Islands. I even got to meet some cool new friends… and convert a few to my Haute Travels following.

Whenever I travel to this pretty little island, I feel at home because the people are warm and beautiful. They’re so friendly; I feel a shared connectedness even though I’m not Bahamian. Over the last several years, I’ve been to Nassau many times, occassionally with my mother, but I always find something new to discover every time I return.

This time I found even more reasons to explore Nassau in a way that I’ve never done before as a writer and photographer. I’m already planning my return for fashion week in the fall. Look for upcoming features on the Bahamas as exclusive Haute Travels profiles because it's just that HAUTE!

Prepare for Spring at Van Michael Salon!

Spring is in the air so it’s time for a haute makeover! Yesterday, I got the star treatment at Van Michael Salon in Buckhead. The hair pros literally took my hand and talked to me about my needs while they combed my hair and gave me a neck massage. It was beauty bliss!

The Van Michael team really spent time getting to know me and my hair. Once we talked about my vision, they shared theirs and guided me through a hair book so that I could see different ways to add highlights. When I decided to trust Ron and add in caramel highlights taking my hair from fall and winter into spring… I never looked back. Kara suggested that I take my base color a shade lighter to really add warmth to my face. But not before, my PR and marketing rep Laura Hinds got the details. When Kara told her that she wanted to do something dramatically different… Laura wanted to know if it was NYC different or ATL different… I just had to laugh! Although, my friend and image consultant Tonya Seavers Evans suggested that I stay close to my established look.

After a second head and neck massage and color it was time for a keratin boost to keep my hair frizz-free as I prepared for an upcoming weekend in the Bahamas. While, I waited for the product to sink in I got a hand massage and sipped herbal tea while emailing a friend with the other hand!

The final step, the blowout and trim with Kara… she brought my shoulder-length bob back to life with her precision cutting and face framing techniques. I loved the way my hair started to bounce when I turned my head… ok so I may be dramatic, but I love my natural hair!

Before heading out the door, J. Marie cleaned up my brows and made my lips pop with a bolder color and softer eye!

My new spring look is HAUTE! And just in time for another trip to my of my favorite locales.

Meeting My Haute Followers

Meeting my twitter followers or lovers of the Haute Travels blog is always a treat. I met Dr. Zelda Pittman a couple of months ago at the Mayor’s Masked Ball in Atlanta. It’s always surprising to me to hear someone say, “I follow you on twitter!” I laugh when I think about it now because my photographer kept telling me that no one had heard of my blog. But after a few women realized that I was the creator of Haute Travels… they started talking about how much they love the site. By the end of the night, my photographer had to retract his statement!

When I met Zelda I was style scouting for “Rock the Look” in New York City… and I selected her as one of ladies who rocked her individual look at the ball. It was really exciting to hear that she’s a HAUTE TRAVELS girl too!

A Message from Kate Mack in Paris

One of my favorite fashion designers in the world is Kate Mack. I met her a few years ago during one of my trips to France where I discovered black designers in Paris. I remember the very first time that my friend Carole introduced us... we were standing in Kate's boutique surrounded by her clothes and jewelry in the heart of Paris. Yes, I was in love! But there has always been something special about Kate as a person and I felt an instant connection with her. She's truly living a life that most girls dream about... designing clothes in the fashion capital of the world and in love with her French fashion photographer boyfriend.

I have always admired the talent, creativity and passion that she brings to her designs... and consider her (in a word) Fierce! And if you don't know who she is... you will. Trust me when I tell you there is nobody like her in the game. And if I sound bias, I am. I love her work... I wear my Kate Mack originals with confidence because no matter where I go somebody asks me "who are you wearing or where did you get that?" I honestly feel the love that she pours into her work. And speaking of love... I recently got an email from Kate and it made me smile and inspired me to take a risk on something or someone new... see for yourself!

Winter travel means more clothes and accessories just to stay warm. But I’ve learned that stepping out into an artic blast can offer a great opportunity to play with fashion inspired by vintage pieces paired with modern comfort and style.

On a recent trip to New York City (pre blizzard), I spent much of my time walking through Manhattan while temperatures continued to drop to the point of no return. So I pulled out a vintage mink coat and paired it with leggings, Uggs and a Louis Vuitton bowler bag! I also added a cashmere baseball cap and mink scarf to keep the chill at bay.

As I moved from one haute spot in NYC to the next, I was more than ready to battle the cold with street gear that rocked… no need for me to go shopping I just stepped into my closet and walked away with great style options. The Passion is in the Risk!

I love the line from the movie, When in Rome, “The passion is in the risk!” The movie is about an ambitious New York woman who gives up on love until it finds her in Rome and follows her back to NYC! But that line really has different meanings for me. When I think of passion and risk, I also think of doing something that most people would never try... because most people are just not risk takers. But thanks to a certain someone who said, “I hope you do it.” The universe has given me everything that I need to make this amazing undertaking possible. I smile every time I think of my team from New York to Miami who love my ideas so much that they have not only brought in their own genius but their personal and professional contacts to help make this adventure one that we’ll all walk away feeling good about.

So if you’re thinking of taking a risk… “I hope you do it!” Great risks have the potential to yield great rewards. Once you take a step forward… everything that you need will find its way into your life so that you can accomplish your goal. Just dream bigger and surround yourself with other risk takers who inspire, motivate and bring the best out of you! Whip Haute NYC Hair!

If you want to whip your hair back and forth… you must make a stop at Wellington’s Hair Salon in New York City. Manhattan Salon Owner and Stylist Patrick Wellington invited me over to give my hair a New York City look. Patrick started out with a shampoo and heat conditioning afterwards an assistant gave me the Wellington blowout using a brush and Paul Mitchell’s Super Skinny Serum! My hair looked amazing… and my lowlights really popped.

Once the blowout was complete, Patrick took small sections of my colored hair and smoothed it out with a flatiron to style. I love shiny hair with lots of body and Patrick did not disappoint!

For tips on how to keep your hair haute Patrick suggests... that you shampoo and condition weekly (I use organic products), keep your ends trimmed every 6 weeks and wear a silk scarf at night to keep your hair from drying out and getting tangled on cotton sheets.

My Dream Shoes are Haute!

My New Year’s wish for the girls who love Haute shoes… that every fashionista gets a pair of her DREAM heels. I love Christian Louboutin’s sexy sling glittered stilettos. So I made a mental note to put it on my vision board. But little did I know that my dream was about to come true.

One day out of the blue my favorite Palm Beach trio of fashionistas gifted me the LOUBY! I was so surprised and grateful because they made my shoe dream wish come true. I kept thinking how did Gwen know that this was my special shoe? I could see them in my dreams. I even felt them on my feet. After all it’s said, “Wearing shoes in your dream, suggests that you are well-grounded or down to earth.”

But my story doesn’t end there… my sparkly Louby stilettos make me smile every time that I wear them and yes, I get lots of comments on the jeweled art that’s worn on my feet. It’s the way that every girl should step out on the town… go glam, sparkle and shine! For every girl out there who loves the red soles… I wish that you get your DREAM shoes in 2011.

Rootstein, the famous Mannequin maker, collaborates with the fashion house of legendary American Designer Halston for a retrospective look at the fashion icon.

I was invited to a private cocktail party in New York City where I met some of the world’s most famous celebrities in the form of life-size mannequins. Liza Minelli, Beyonce and a host of others wore shimmery beaded Halston originals. The showroom was full of glamour and style from the 70’s and 80’s when Halston became a household name among fashion lovers.

Halston became world famous when he designed the pillbox hat that Jacqueline Kenney wore to her husband’s 1961 presidential inauguration. His famous designs were also worn by the international jet-set like Bianca Jagger, Lauren Bacall and Elizabeth Taylor.

There’s no place in the world like New York City. It’s the place where dreams come true and nightlife is haute! On my recent trip, I had several events to attend in the course of just 72 hours. Therefore, finding a perfect balance between glam and cocktail chic meant one thing—assemble a mini glam squad!

Every glam squad needs a hair stylist… so I turned to “Glam God” Karli Harvey in Atlanta. She gave my super straight bob curls that I’ve never had before. When it came to makeup… I went to the Mac store where the artist paired a sultry eye with neutral lips.

Finally, What should I wear to my first event? A dress that’s haute (check)… once I ran the color choice by Style Strategist Tonya Seavers Evans, it was a tribute to gold metallic.

My girl Maureen Martin from Rock The Look helped me play with accessories like jewelry and wraps to finish off a polished look allowing a fun night in the city!

As the holiday season gets into full swing, I decided to forgo the traditional red and rock jewel tones. I’ve been working with style consultant on abandoning my black for colors that pop next to my complexion. She’s got me wearing all kinds of hues like purple, gold, navy and loving it!

She suggests that I always focus on shape and silhouette because once you get that down it’s easy to select figure flattering garments according to your body type. Since my body type is more hour glass… it’s important that I select great fitting garments with emphasis on a cinched waist. But it’s not easy working with curves! I’m always conscious as the style consultant suggests of the image and message that I’m conveying through fashion.

She suggests the following when selecting your HAUTE look:

-Blend out to create an effective image

Haute Hair: My Inner Grace Kelly

Beauty icon Princess Grace Kelly exuded glamour, style and elegance. So it’s no wonder why I’ve always been a fan and decided to channel my inner Kelly with a modern day version of her shoulder-length bob.
To start, you’ll need a simple, just below the shoulder bob that flatters you. In fact, the Kelly style suits most girls with round or long faces.

To get my version of the Princess Grace look… I washed my hair with a keratin shampoo and moisturizing conditioner like Global Keratin’s Juvexin.

I generally blow dry my hair out straight using a rounded brush, lifting from the base to add volume using Oscar Blandi’s Volumizing Spray at the root. It’s easier for me because I have a keratin treatment that protects against frizz and keeps my hair silky straight.

The next step, flat iron to smooth and use medium size rollers turning them under or pin curl your hair over night to get bouncing curls. When you’re satisfied with your curls simply brush your hair enough to style. I also part my hair on the left side just like Kelly.

To finish, I generally use Pureology’s Antifade complex to maintain the shine of my colored-treated hair.

The Fifth Annual L’Oreal Paris Women of Worth program recognized ten extraordinary women on December 9th in New York City. All of the honorees are committed to making a beautiful difference in the lives of others. Each woman honored, through her example, made all of us proud.

L’Oreal Paris is making a $5,000 donation to the charitable cause of each 2010 Woman of Worth Honoree. The beauty brand is also making another $5,000 donation in the name of each honoree to support the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund. In addition, one of the honorees, Taryn Davis, The American Widow Project also received a $25,000 donation to her cause thanks to a public online vote.

Throughout the evening, I was amazed and grateful for all of the women recognized for their courage and empathy for other people… motivating and inspiring all of us to find some way on our own to improve the world. This night really brought home the message that we’re all worth it and that’s why we were in that space on that day to support and honor each other.

I remember actress Viola Davis saying that there are two days in every person’s life that we remember the most… the day that we were born and the day we discover our purpose. I was also inspired by Actress and L’Oreal Spokesmodel Kerry Washington who said that she never dreamed of being a beauty spokesmodel, but she grew up in a home where she was told that anything is possible.

Again, it was an amazing night on the 44th floor of the Hearst Magazines offices with the New York City skyline right behind us.

A short meditative walk with

My therapist used ten different essential oils customized specifically for me in preparation for the Balsamic Mayan Massage. The oils were slowly dropped long the vertebrae of my back like “tiny rain drops” before hot stones were used to help the oils penetrate the skin. The benefits of this relaxing massage were immediate—no stress or negative thoughts to invade my consciousness. When my session was over, my therapist signaled with a soft ringing of a bell to awaken my soul.

The Haute Kim Kardashian Lip by Eryn Renee!

The Kim Kardashian lip is the haute new way to pucker up. Kardashian reportedly wears Mac’s “Angel” and Nar’s “Turkish Delight” to achieve her pinky lips. When I wanted to achieve a similar lip, I consulted Atlanta-based celebrity makeup artist and esthetician Eryn Renee, known for her application of extreme and individual lashes.

Eryn Renee used various shades of nude with a medium brown lip liner to achieve my Kardashian-inspired lips. Focusing on a three-dimensional contrast, she applied Mac’s “Siss” as my base and “Myth” on the inside of the lip. To get this look, it took less than a minute.

She also added individual lashes to draw attention to a darker eye, but stopped short of giving me the Kardashian signature smoky eye… we’re saving that for another post.

Sometimes it’s good to break away with one of your great girlfriends just to chat, laugh and repeat! One of my favorite things to do is meet a friend for a brainstorm or “Mastermind” session as Monique puts it to talk about projects, passions or ideas. Since we’re both independent business women, we understand that your network impacts your “net worth.” Therefore, we headed to a haute spot in Atlanta called Sip… The Experience, an urban lifestyle and coffee lounge in the Lindberg area. The New BMW 5-Series is HAUTE!

There’s no doubt that BMW is the ultimate driving machine. I joined a select group of who’s who in Atlanta for a ride and drive event at the $12 million BMW Performance Driving School in South Carolina courtesy of BMW and UpTown Magazine.

We hit the tracks in teams of two and tested each of the new offerings by BMW for 2011. The crowd favorite by far—the new 5 Series. The updated model is a little larger, but some would say smaller visually. The 3.0-liter twin power turbocharged 535i is not for the girls who like to steer but rather those who like to drive. The car offers smooth acceleration with the power to match.

After testing the new 535i on a series of obstacles courses where the rubber really meets the road… the BMW was nothing short of impressive. I will never drive my 5 series the same again. The handling, breaking and sheer power of the 535i is HAUTE! I was impressed and wanted to upgrade all at the same time.

The new 535i has an adequate amount of torque that takes on just about any road condition. The new 5-Series comes with two automatic transmissions, but an optional eight-speed and $500 sport automatic with paddle shifters is also available. You can also change gears with the six-speed manual shifter.

The new version also features an “updated drive and overhauled infotainment system,” along with driver aids like Park Assist… allowing you to parallel park with ease. The car looks great and easily recognized as the best sports sedan in its class when it comes to how it handles on the road. Again, it doesn’t disappoint when it comes to performance!

For the girls who love to sit behind the wheel of a car that says, I’m all that…this one is for you.

What’s on my mind today—Paris! I find that I’m waking up everyday thinking about the City of Light. So that tells me one thing… it’s time to go back. But this time, I have something new in mind as I plan my next escape to a place that’s often felt like home. I’ve spent a great deal of time in the most fashionable and creative city on the planet over the years. Yes, it really is all that.

Now that I’ve adapted this global view of the world and how I fit into it, I’ve decided to host a group of fashionable, intelligent, travel-loving women who believe in giving back. So I’m planning a trip that will involve a fashion twist with a visit to local charities… along with social gatherings that bring together black designers, fashion photographers and other members of the Paris’ who’s who among professionals of color or not of color, just cool people… many happen to be my friends.

My wish for this exclusive, yet personal trip—that every girl gets to see Paris as I’ve seen it. A place that allows you to explore your creativity, talk about world events with people from other cultures and challenges you to do something that you’ve never done before. It’s also a place that will inspire you to take a risk and follow what’s in your heart. No matter how many times I visit Paris, I always come away with something even more amazing than before.

So I’ll spend the next few months planning this amazing experience with my friends so that it accomplishes all that I have in mind. When it comes to travel… it’s my thing. And with that comes the opportunity to visit various destinations, properties, restaurants and spas as a guest. Generally, I’m expected to capture a story and tell others about my experience. I write a lot and often I contribute articles without compensation because I love what I do.

When I decided to pick a spot for a girlfriends brunch story idea… I decided to reach out to Concentrics and highlight one of their restaurants in Virginia Highland. So I invited a group of professional women to join me at Murphy’s on Sunday. Little did we know that what could have been a great experience was about to become a rude awakening.

When I arrived at Murphy’s half the party was there and another woman ran late because of “mommy stuff.” But never-the-less we expected a great afternoon of networking and chatting about ways to support one another’s passions and businesses. During the course of our visit there were some things that the restaurant could have done better, improved upon. But I didn’t focus on that… so I thanked Concentrics for inviting me in to sample the brunch.

To my surprise, I received an email from Concentrics accusing the group of not leaving a tip, staying too long and being late. I was not happy about it… so I called them on it. Ironically, the email didn’t mention the long wait to get our order placed, the dish coming out with a raw egg that I made clear I cannot eat or the fact that one of the girls was overcharged by $55 and called to inquire about it, but received a less than professional response from a manager.

Not only was the information wrong about arrival, tipping and length of stay without taking into account our wait, but it was the way they delivered the information. There was no courtesy call to get our side of the story and no sensitivity to an email that “plays into stereotypes about black women” because you accused us of not tipping even though it’s optional. Perhaps, I shouldn’t expect someone who isn’t a woman of color to get that… but there’s always hope.

It’s unfortunate that in 2010, we still have issues that arise out of stereotypes that cause hurt and bring insults when it could have been avoided by simply picking up the phone and talking to me or us. Now, after the fact, the head of the company wants to talk. As my followers, you tell me what we should talk about?

I appreciate the women who were not at Murphy’s, but understand that when you judge one group of black women—you judge us all. And I am so happy to have a network of girlfriends who support me… even if they were not there. We all have shared experiences that remind us of who others think we are without getting the facts straight; we understand the pain that it causes.

Therefore, until I receive a complete and sincere apology, I will not return to another Concentrics restaurant. I ask that those of you who feel the same way… share your story and refrain from patronizing businesses that stir this kind of raw emotion without putting forth an effort to make it right. Concentrics and Murphy’s have an opportunity to show us that we matter, that we are welcome to enjoy a pleasant experience and walk away with a good taste in our mouths instead of something sour.

I’m not the kind of writer who just goes along to get a meal, but rather one with conviction, courage and passion. I’m just one writer with one voice, but collectively we can make a difference.

Haute Couture Handmade Hats

French Hat Maker Lou Mistraou creates couture hats made by hand in Provence, France for the girls who understand how to wear—haute headgear. He could be the last of the “most prestigious” hat makers in the region dating back five generations in the area of La Rochelle. Therefore, to acquire a Mistraou was a dream come true for me.

Stepping out on a whim, Mistraou created a hat that would battle the violent icy air that often comes with extremely cold winter months like those in Provence. He created “the Mistral,” a hat much like the people in Provence, “whimsical and impetuous.” Thus was born Lou Mistraou, named after the wind that has inspired it. Mistraou says, “The mistral cultivates paradoxes, but one thing is for sure, when the wind starts blowing, you better protect yourself!”

As a woman who travels the globe, I understand the need to stay warm and fashionable at the same time during extremely cold winters like those in the Midwest. I absolutely love the vibrancy of my Mistral… it may not be for the Atlanta scene, but it’s going to be a hit in Paris, Chicago and London!

Fall has officially arrived and there’s no time like the present for a beauty transformation. I decided to make my dark chestnut colored hair pop with color. So I headed to William David Salon in Buckhead and put my tresses in the hands of Celebrity Hair Stylist and Owner Bill Murphy. Yes, that Bill Murphy! He’s worked with some of the most beautiful women in the world from Victoria’s Secret fashion show super models to celebrities from every corner of the globe.

When I arrived at the salon, Murphy and his team spent a lot of time examining my hair, lifestyle and personality. After making a few suggestions, we agreed on tobacco colored hair with a splash of red and copper low lights.

Murphy introduced me to the Italian product line called Davines. I was pleasantly surprised at the rich color options and absolutely loved the outcome following a wash and deep conditioning. The product is amazing and my hair even smelled as good as it looked.

Murphy is also a master at the “zigzag” highlights, after all he created it! He doesn’t just brush the color onto the hair in a straight line, but rather he blends it onto the strands so that it flows throughout with incredible movement and shine. My hair has never looked better.
Once my color was applied, I was whisked to the style room where Zeno flatten it out… and thanks to a keratin boost, my hair was frizz-free. I opted for a long bang and fullness rather than super straight hair. The end-result—healthy, shiny hair with lots of body!
But that wasn’t all… Eryn Renee added individual lashes to make my eyes come alive along with a brow threading and makeup. As they say” beauty is how you feel inside and out—reflected in your eyes.”

Think about vacationing on some exotic beach and Mr. Wonderful walks into your life. It can happen because it’s happen to me while traveling to some of the world’s haute spots. I hear women say all the time that they can’t find a good black man. Well, that’s a myth. Ironically, as much as I’m out and about in the city, I rarely meet men that capture my attention. But once I grab my passport, toss my carryon over my shoulder and head to some place far away from home—something happens.

Being a single girl in the city has its pros and cons… you’re on 24/7. No matter where you go it’s like being on display… think hair, nails, and wardrobe. Now, living in Atlanta has an entirely different spin… everybody needs a publicist, makeup artist and stylist! No, you don’t have to be a celebrity here to have a glam squad; you just have to think that you’re someone famous. But what really gets my girls from Chicago and New York laughing is the fact that these southern beauties announce members of their beauty team in public. In other parts of the world, that’s always kept a secret!

So once I land in some sizzling haute spot with my sun-kissed skin, refreshing personality and smile, “something happens.” I shed the glam side and keep it natural. As a result, black men notice me; they approach me, talk to me and want to get to know a little more about the American girl that’s sitting poolside with an air of confidence and a little bit of mystery to go along with her tropical drink. Sure, they notice my other assets after all a Haute Travels girl has learned to embrace her curves… I’m lovin them! And we all know that no matter where you meet black men, they love the versatility and uniqueness of our ample thighs, round bottoms and full lips, especially the bottom lip. I hear when you poke it out; it’s a sign of confidence. But you didn’t hear that from me.

When you follow your passion—the universe lines up in complete agreement and you open your heart and mind to something new allowing amazing things and people to come into your life. I can tell you from personal experience that this can happen. Remember the law of attraction? You get back what you put out… it’s never been more true.

By now you’re wondering what are my secrets… it’s simple. I just focus on being authentic, pleasant and drama-free. I‘m not looking for anything or anyone, I’m just living my passion and truth. I’ve come to learn that men like women who are independent, but who allow them to do the chasing. They like happy, active women because that’s attractive to them.

You should also have a set of standards that smart, mature women live by. Don’t compromise integrity because men will test you just to see if you’re “that girl.” Focus on being the best person that you can be whether single or not and love and friendship will find you no matter where you are in the world.

Dreamgirls is HAUTE!

The hit musical Dreamgirls comes alive on stage at Atlanta’s Fox Theatre. The story line is much the same as we’ve seen on Broadway and the big screen so no surprises there, but the talent in this young cast is amazing. Former American Idol finalist Syesha Mercado, plays “Deena Jones” and delivers a good performance, but it’s the unforgettable Moya Angela who plays “Effie White” that brings the crowd to its feet when she sings “that” song made famous by Jennifer Holiday and helped deliver an Academy Award to Jennifer Hudson for her performance in the movie Dreamgirls!

The story begins at the famed Apollo Theatre in New York City in the 1960's when the girls leave their hometown of Chicago for the “concrete jungle” where their big dreams inspire them to take a risk! But their luck was just beginning when they meet the self-serving, underhanded and wicked “Curtis Taylor” played by Chaz Lamar Shepherd who takes them from an unknown group to Jimmy Early backup singers before letting them shine on their own to become international superstars. “All you have to do is dream” as the title song suggests offers the audience an amazing odyssey inspired by music and travel throughout the musical taking these Midwest girls to Paris and beyond.

As with any girl group, there was a little fighting going on amidst the gorgeous gowns, wigs, love affairs and egos. But by the end of the story, the girls make their way around the world only to return home to find that life isn’t always about fame and fortune but how you treat people along the way. Each of the girls start a journey of self-discovery and begin “Changing” from girls who just wanted to sing to powerful women taking control of their lives... becoming better than they were, while staring in the second act of life. In the end, the power of friendship leads them back to what really matters… as they say “there’s no place like home” and the love of true friends to help you get there.

I love the Dreamgirls story and found this musical to be both entertaining and surprisingly funny. Actors Chestor Gregory (James “Thunder” Early) and Adrienne Warren (Lorrell Robinson) also gave the crowd something to clap about with memorable lines and soul-stirring performances. This is definitely one to check out before its limited engagement in the ATL is over. The show runs through October 17th, 2010 in Atlanta but may come to a town near you as part of a national tour so check your local listings.

As I thumb through this little pocket guide, the beauty of Paris comes alive with each stunning photo. When I came upon page 128, a smile crossed my face because I remember my afternoon of spa rituals at Spa Cinq Mondes housed in the posh square de L’Opera-Louis-Jouvet in the 9th arr. My day began with a beautiful Japanese bath in a wooden tub with rose petals dropped at my feet followed by a French facial.

"Masterchef " Finalist Tracy Nailor's Haute Dishes

You may know Tracy Nailor as a finalist from Fox TV’s “Masterchef” with Gordon Ramsay. Nailor, a Pediatrician and Atlanta resident is not only a great cook, but she’s so much fun! Last night, my good friend Monique and I were invited by the Concentrics Restaurants group to dinner at the posh, Midtown haute spot Room at Twelve for a sample of Nailor’s creative dishes. We started off with crab cakes before moving onto the smothered chicken over rice. You can say it’s home-style comfort food that makes you want hug your plate.

During dinner, Nailor gave a cooking demo on how to make her Caramelized Banana Napoleon. It was pretty tasty, particularly if you like a modern twist on banana pudding. She’s full of terrific recipes that make you remember your southern roots... so when Monique and I show up for Thanksgiving dinner, she shouldn’t be surprised! Haute Jewelry Designer John Wind Inspired by Fashion and Travel

Passion for Jewelry Designer and Founder of Maximal Art John Wind is like the melody to a perfect love song. His handmade pieces are a unique mix of vintage and modern, but yet there’s something endearing about them that tells a story of a period reflecting “soul, personality and narrative.” Acquiring his jewelry is like uncovering a past relationship that one never knew existed. “I like that fact that you’re adopting an instant ancestor,” says Wind.

It appears his artwork was more organic than planned but never-the-less, it became an obsession. “I won a scholarship to the Slade School of Art in London. It was in the early 80’s and I got swept up in the club world. It was all about fashion, to the point of costume, (think Culture Club and The Thompson Twins), and making crazy flea-market jewelry assemblages to wear was just part of the deal,” explains Wind.

But it wasn’t until he met another jewelry designer, Andrew Logan, in London that his foray into jewelry making was born. “Logan really inspired me with giant brooches made of broken mirror bits and brooches set into some kind of putty,” says Wind. “As an art student, I really thought of my brooches as little sculptures.”

Over the years, the line has evolved to include a variety of accessories. “Brooches have given way to earrings, then necklaces, bracelets and charms,” he adds. But just where does he get his inspiration? “We listen to our customers and stay aware of fashion trends.”

Wind’s relationship with his jewelry is personal, protective, but profound. However, the woman who wears his art is described as independent and fun. “She likes to accessorize, loves vintage jewelry but is still a modern woman.”

Just when you thought that you knew what inspired Wind, he offers another twist. “Travel has everything to do with my creative expression. I am so inspired by the “Grand Tours” of the past, where gentlemen brought home souvenirs from Ancient Rome or Egypt. My designs are almost an homage to or souvenir of a place. My all-time favorites are London, Paris and Palm Beach,” exclaims Wind.

Fans of the line can expect more charms and silver-toned collections that will surely turn up in the private boudoir of the girl with a style that’s all her own.

I absolutely love photography; it means “writing with light.” This photo captures the essence of who I am… I love it! It’s always interesting to me to learn a little about what a photographer sees when he or she captures your image. In this photo, I was completely natural, no makeup, sweating in the Curacao heat, all flaws exposed and my hair was a mess. But somehow my photographer captured something more. He saw something different as reflected in this shot. He said the light was hitting me well and became inspired by the idea of capturing his vision. Nothing here was rehearsed it was spur of the moment which generally reveals those raw moments that are haute. In my opinion, it’s the way that you capture life. There’s nothing more intoxicating.

Atlanta-based Fashion Designer Mychael Knight debuts Two², his haute new signature dress that can be worn four ways! I love designers who think about the everyday woman and her needs. After all, we can’t work an avant-garde look every day.

The former Bravo TV Project Runway standout and finalist from season three has always had a knack for understanding his clients’ needs. But this year, he decided to stitch something new. Knight wanted to experiment a little more. He admits that he needed a little “couture” cleansing allowing him to start fresh by stepping away from the Project Runway image with a blank slate.

“For four years, I’ve been thinking about a cool duality that’s chic and sophisticated,” explains Knight. So he designed a dress that allows for multiple fashion options. It’s Knight’s mark on the fashion world just like the wrap dress for Designer Diane von Furstenberg.

The haute new 5th Street Café opens in Atlanta’s chic Midtown. Traditional black and white French bistro décor with flashes of color, elegant crocodile, patent leather booths adorned with claw feet and new patio wows patrons who may shout ooOOh la la!

A.D. Allushi and Chef Ian Winslade, co-owners of ADI Restaurant Concepts, partnered with Atlanta Hawk Zaza Pachulia in converting ENO by Zaza into the European contemporary 5th Street Café. The group recently launched Buckhead Bottle Bar, located in the heart of Buckhead

For the menu, expect favorite bistro and café fare, such as a charcuterie plate of meats and cheeses, frisee salad with bacon, shallot vinaigrette and soft poached egg, potato gnocchi, basil butter and spring vegetables. The former wine shop and tasting room has been remodeled into a patisserie with fresh breads and pastries.

5th Street Café is a great spot to meet friends for a memorable evening out… I totally enjoyed girlfriend hour with my friend and fellow blogger Monique Steadman Eddleton. We had a blast! So Chic, so Haute!

Chanel re-opens Soho boutique with a little more edge. The luxury brand has celebs and non-celebs flocking to its new store. There’s a new graffiti wall with Chanel spray paint and ten-foot high Chanel No. 5 bottle streaming the latest Paris runway footage that lets you know Coco is still in the house!

Haute handbags and dreamy lambskin makes this handbag bar second to none. There’s even an exclusive line of bags with a ‘Chanel Soho 2010’ engraved plaque. But don’t forget the shoes… the 2010 fall collection is out!

Idris Elba Interviews Haute Travels in Curacao

What happens when a chance meeting turns into a really cool conversation with one of the stars from the biggest movie out right now, Takers? Something HAUTE… that’s why when I got the chance to meet Idris Elba, I really wanted to know how travel inspires him, but he wanted to interview me. I’m thinking to myself, “Why” I’m not that interesting.

So I sat there trying to keep it together as he asked me questions about my career and beyond all without a shirt on with just a pair of shorts and that British accent that’s so HAUTE. But I got through it and thought… there’s still a story here after all. I just didn’t recognize it.

Imagine sitting on a beautiful stretch of beach in one of the prettiest places on earth, Curacao, talking to “Driis” as his friends call him and not having seen his new movie or the television series, The Wire! Lol However, in my defense, I planned to see Takers this week! Fortunately, he didn’t seem to hold that against me and instead decided that he wanted to know more about this southern girl from Atlanta who knew absolutely nothing about all the things that made him famous. In fact, he seemed to like it. I was honest about it. And he may have even been intrigued by that. But from my perspective, it made him a person to me and not a celebrity. So in that unguarded moment, I was candid with him.

Here are 5 questions that Idris Elba asked before he went for a swim in the ocean... leaving me thinking, wow, he really got me with the role reversal!

Idris: Why did you move back to Atlanta?

Answer: So that I could spend more time with my parents who missed me while I lived in Chicago for so many years. Now they’re older.

Idris: What’s your favorite city to travel to?

Answer: Paris, it’s the place where I feel the most creative and free

Idris: Do you always poke your lip out when you think no one is watching?

Answer: I don’t… but he said “Yes, you do. I saw you do it.” Lol Of course, I kept denying it!

Idris: What makes you happy?

Answer: Helping people who want to write about travel… find their passion and follow their dream. At the end of the day, I’m also a story teller. So I help people lay the blueprint for creating their own script about their lives.

Idris: What’s your real age?
Answer: ??… but he says, “No Way!” Yes, really.

Thanks Mr. Elba for flipping the script and giving me a story that I never expected. You just never know how chance encounters offer an opportunity for introspection in those spare moments (that we rarely have time for) allowing someone to see inside your soul. By changing things up, I got to learn a lot more about you than I could have ever imagined.

Haute Travels Heads to Beautiful Curacao

It’s time for some sun and relaxation… so I’m headed to Curacao this week. I’m super excited because I’ve never visited the island before and I love exploring new places. I’m also thrilled to call the new Hyatt Regency Curacao Golf Resort, Spa and Marina home for a week! The 27-acre resort, also known as the “centerpiece of the exclusive Santa Barbara Plantation,” sits on beautiful beachfront (private) property nestled between the Caribbean Sea and Spanish Water Bay.

The resort also features three new restaurants with menu items that are all about seafood and farm-to-table ingredients. But my favorite spot, besides the beach—the Atabei Spa. I’m a girl who loves to indulge with a great massage, pedi, facial or body scrub.
