Haute Spot: Monte Carlo

If you’re in France or Italy and you have the time, a fabulous getaway to Monte Carlo (an area of the Principality of Monaco) is a must-do.  I’ve been to this chic coastal community along the French-Italian border a few times over the years.  And it never disappoints a globetrotter like me.

Americans have been curious about this place ever since Hollywood's Grace Kelly married Monaco's Prince Rainier III.  Many people come to relax and unwind with the gorgeous Mediterranean Sea in mind.  Monaco is the place where multi-million dollar yacht lovers rejoice with beautiful weather and great views. Plus, the Monaco Grand Prix attracts race car fans the world over and the antique autos typically seen outside the casino have their own fan following.

The best time to visit Monaco is usually April or October for a few days. You'll have plenty of time to enjoy the beach, the royal palace, Princess Grace's rose garden and the Monte Carlo Casino. James Bond movie fans may remember the casino from "Golden Eye" and "Never Say Never Again."

Jet-setters have long called Monaco the place to be seen with its glitz and glamour as the backdrop to an unforgettable vacation.  Go ahead and spoil yourself with your haute travels in the town where millionaires call home.

Here are a few tips when traveling to Monte Carlo:

Hotel:  Fairmont Monte Carlo Hotel sits along the Mediterranean and the iconic casino. It’s just a stone’s throw away from the area’s hot spots. The rooftop pool view is amazing. The rooms are comfortable with marble baths, and a private terrace with sea views.  Rates average $500 USD and up.

Dine: My favorite place to eat in Monte Carlo is Nobu housed inside the Fairmont Hotel.  I enjoyed breakfast every morning with a sea view.  The restaurant also offers an array of dishes with an Asian flare for dinner.

Getting There:  I flew into Nice from Paris and took a cab to Monte Carlo. However, trains and buses are also available. It’s about a 45-minute ride along the coast with views that will take your breath away.

Bonus Tip:

You can take the train to other cities along the French Riviera for just a few dollars.
