Haute Summer Travel Tips for 2022

Summer vacation is taking off to colorful destinations for a little fun in the sun. And it appears that travel is getting back to normal for the most part but prepare to pack more than your flip flops. The pandemic has certainly left it's mark from higher prices to pilot shortages and crowded airports compared to a year ago.

I generally try not to travel during peak summer months and wait until August to get my vacay on. If you decide that you're ready to hit the road or fly to your haute spot no matter what... here are some travel tips that may come in handy.

Pack your Patience

The airports, trains and roadways are going to be crowded. And there is a shortage of pilots and rental cars. Just about everybody is ready to get out of the house and getaway.

Figure out what brings you peace... crystals, books on tape or yoga and meditation and bring it along with you. Prepare to relax while you wait. You should also check out spas and message stations at the airport. It's so calming... I did this while I waited seven hours for a flight in Doha.

I also spend time in the lounges at the airport. If you have membership or opt for a day pass, you get free food, drinks, and wifi. But if you are traveling internationally, you can access sleeping areas and showers.

You may also find a restaurant or wine bar at the airport or train station to calm you, while you wait. There is nothing like great food or a glass of wine that brings comfort during turbulent times. If you're driving, a rest stop or a planned picnic at a nearby park during your road trip may take the edge off.

Prepare for Delays

We're all seen the long lines at the airport with people being left in many cases stranded. But if you plan for the unexpected, it may not be as bad. You can anticipate delays by researching your flight information before heading to the airport. Make sure that your email is attached to your flight info for updates in your inbox. It most certainly helps to know if you should head to the airport early or not.

But if your flight is delayed while you're at the gate, find out why. If your flight is delayed or cancelled due to anything other than extrodinary circumstances such as weather... you can be compensated for hotel and meal expenses depending on how long it takes to get you in the air. You should visit the airlines' website for details before filing a claim.

You can also contact your credit card company to find out if your  card (such as American Express, Visa or Master Card) comes with lost luggage or trip interruption insurance.

And this may be a good time to purchase travel insurance just in case you need it.

Have a Backup plan

If your initial travel plans change at a moment's notice... consider a staycation or explore the city where you are stranded. But be sure to bring emergency funds just in case you have to wait for reimbursements.

Haute Tip: Delta Airlines "Bags on Time" promise offers 2,500 Skymiles if they fail to get your bags to you within 20 minutes or less after a domestic flight.
