My Tips on How to Manage a Weather Delay at the Airport

Every traveler knows that weather delays can cause a major inconvenience to the best vacation plans especially if you're not prepared.  The best way to anticipate the inevitable flight delay or cancellation is to be one step ahead.  And always pack your patience along with a positive attitude.

Here are my tips on how to weather any storm at the airport.

Book A Flexible Ticket

Book your ticket with the option to change in the event that your flight is delayed or cancelled.  I generally book my flights early morning in case things change.  It's easier to switch to another flight or airline if you have the entire day ahead of you.  You can search for a different flight on your laptop or tablet and book online.

You should also check your credit card because some offer travel benefits/insurance to recover the cost of the ticket and change fees.

Know Before You Go

Do your research, check the weather in your city as well as your destination before you head to the airport.  You should also sign up for flight updates with your airlines.  They will generally send a text or email to you when a flight delay or cancellation occurs.  You can also download apps to help track your flight cancellations and delays.

I was in Milan, Italy a couple of years ago; my flight into JFK was delayed.  Fortunately, the airlines contacted me with an email and gave me a heads up.  I called and asked about a reroute to skip New York and fly into my home city.  Surprisingly, they gave me the option to fly into Rome, Italy but I would have to stay over for two days and cover those expenses myself.

Go to the Airport Lounge to Rest and Relax

If you're already at the airport, head to an airport lounge with food, drinks and comfortable seats so you can wait it out.  There are also some lounges with sleeping areas, showers and free wifi!

If you're flying first class, your ticket will allow complimentary access to several clubs depending on your airlines or credit card used to purchase your ticket.  You can also pay a fee to enter lounges like the Sky Club or the Admirals Club if you're flying on Delta or American.  However, always check because access is subject to change especially in 2020.

Shop, Eat, Spa, Repeat

If you decide not to go to a lounge, you can always find a good restaurant, shop at the boutiques or get a spa treatment in the airport.  It will definitely make you forget all about your troubles.

In the event that your flight is cancelled, check with the airlines to see if they can offer any assistance like hotel, food or transportation vouchers if you're away from home.  It never hurts to ask, however, weather delays are not their fault therefore, they generally do not offer compensation but you never know when they may make an exception because you packed your patience and positive vibes!
