How to Save on Solo Travel

As a solo traveler, I know that jetting off to some of my favorite places can be expensive. But just because you're not traveling with your BFF to split costs, you can implement a few strategies to save more.

If you follow me then you know that I love to save on hotels and airfare using points and miles. It's still my number one way to travel for practically free even thought I earned the points and miles with prior purchases. But when you are building your points and miles, you can still getaway without breaking the bank.

Here are my Four Tips on Saving for Your Solo Trip:

Time Your Travel to Takeoff During "Shoulder Season"

When it comes to travel, I really do not like traveling during high season. It's costly and crowded. I don't like fighting for my lounge chair on the beach. And I really don't like long lines at restaurants. So I started traveling for a summer vacay either in early June or late August for lower rates and fewer hotel points.

Mix it UP with Airfare

Air travel is costly so I try to book my ticket at the lowest price possible. And I don't always book a round trip ticket. I have found that I can save money when booking multiple one-way tickets. The key to travel is always be flexible.

Book Hotels in the Center of Town to Reduce Transportation Costs

When I travel solo, safety is important along with location. I write down things that I plan to do and look at hotels that are near those places. A hotel that is centrally located is always a great idea because it can cut out transportation costs or reduce them. For instance, when I am in Paris, I love staying in the Vendome area because I can walk to so many shops, restaurants, museums and iconic landmarks.

Get Multiple Trips Out of One Ticket

When traveling to places like Milan, Italy you can get multiple trips out of one airline ticket. Milan is near Lake Como and Portofino. When you fly into Milan, you can travel about 45 minutes from the airport to Lake Como. If you want to add Portofino, you can hire a driver and head to this scenic beach destination for another getaway. The drive is about 2.5 hours from Milan.
